With a population of 4,237,808, Panama is ranked 130th out of the 195 countries. The people living in Panama, known as Panamanians, are made up primarily of the following ethnic groups: the Mestizo --mixed Amerindian and white -- ethnic group (65% of the population), followed by the Native American -- Ngabe 7.6%, Kuna 2.4%, Embera 0.9%, Bugle 0.8%, other 0.4%, unspecified 0.2% -- ethnic group (12.3% of the population), black or African descent (9.2%of the population), Mulatto -- a person of mixed white and black ancestry -- (6.8% of the population), and white (6.7% of the population). In the country of Panama, the most common religion is the Roman Catholic (85% of the population), followed by the Protestant (15% of the population).
Panama currently finds itself in a demographic transition, depicted through the steadily declining rates of fertility, mortality, and population growth; however, in the midst of this demographic transition, differences can still be seen based on wealth, geography, and ethnicity. Panama is also in the middle of a economic transition. Panama is currently expanding and growing its economy faster than any other Latin American country, and much of the country's funding goes toward social programs -- in fact, Panama's unemployment rate is pretty low. However, poverty and inequality are both common. Panama has greatly expanded access to education and clean water, but the availability of sanitation and electricity remains poor; however, on the plus side, Panama has seen a rise in secondary education -- especially in women -- spread to both rural and indigenous areas, which can be seen as one of the early steps taken to decrease inequality.
The country of Panama currently has a population of 2,102,995 females (making up 49.6% of the population) and 2,134,813 males (making up 50.4% of the population). These numbers show that Panama's population is pretty evenly spread out, and this is further shown by the country's population pyramid shown below. A population pyramid is a data model that illustrates the age and sex (gender) structure of a country's population, with the ages depicted in 5-year increments and the sex structure depicted in different colors (pink for females and blue for males).
